Public meeting begins at 7 p.m. today in Brunswick BRUNSWICK
- The town will hold a public meeting to discuss the base closure process
at 7 p.m. today in the old Brunswick High School on McKeen Street.
David Drozd, of the Navy's Base Realignment and Closure Program
Management Office Northeast, and Bryant Monroe, of the U.S. Department of
Defense Office of Economic Adjustment, will attend the meeting to answer
questions and share insights about how a base closure unfolds. The Office
of Economic Adjustment provides planning assistance and funding to
communities facing closure of military bases.
The federal Base
Realignment and Closure Commission voted 7-2 on Aug. 24 to recommend
closing Brunswick Naval Air Station. The recommendations still must
receive approval from President Bush and Congress. The closure would
likely not be completed for several years, but state and local officials
want to begin planning for the aftermath immediately.
Patricia
Harrington, Brunswick's assistant town manager, cautions people to avoid
making assumptions based on past BRAC rounds about how the base closure
process will proceed. The process, she said, has changed.
"It's
more market driven and more speed drive," she
said. |
