Congressman Garamendi Urges Air Force to Bring KC-10 Program to Travis Air Force Base
August 23, 2012
The complete letter is here (http://www.garamendi.house.gov/KC10Letter.pdf) (pdf) and below.
Garamendi believes the KC-10 CNS/ATM program should be housed at Travis, because it would limit the amount of time the aircraft are out of service and could save the Air Force money through decreased transit time and distance.
Garamendi has also been leading the charge (http://garamendi.house.gov/2012/08/congressman-garamendi-urges-pentagon-to-center-kc-46a-tanker-at-travis-air-force-base-in-bipartisan.shtml) to bring the KC-46A mission to Travis.
The Honorable Michael B. Donley
Secretary of the Air Force
1670 Air Force Pentagon
Washington, DC 20330
Dear Secretary Donley:
We write to you regarding the KC-10 Communications, Navigation, and Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) program, which is budgeted and programmed over the next three fiscal years. We are pleased to see that the Air Force budget supporting documentation recognizes a projected service life of 2045 for KC-10 aircraft and makes investments in required modifications.
The KC-10 CNS/ATM program is of particular interest to our communities given the presence of 27 KC-10 aircraft at Travis Air Force Base. We would ask that you consider performing the modifications and upgrades at Travis AFB; rather than sending the aircraft to a depot. There is recent precedence for this with the very successful Avionics Modernization Program (AMP) upgrades to the C-5, which were conducted on the ramp at Travis AFB.
Our communities stand ready to support any contractors and military personnel required to perform the CNS/ATM modifications, and keeping the aircraft at Travis AFB could benefit the Air Force, installation, and airmen by limiting the amount of time the aircraft are out of service. There is also potential for cost savings by performing modification work at Travis AFB, as expenses associated with relocating the aircraft would not be incurred. Thank you for your consideration of this request, your past support of Travis AFB, and for your service to our nation.
