Senator Nelson Proposes Plan to Fund Airport Control Towers
April 1, 2013
In one week airport control towers will be forced to close at several airports across the country.
Florida Senator Bill Nelson says he may have a solution.
Speaking from Lakeland Linder Regional Airport, Senator Bill Nelson said the job the airport control tower workers do, is much more important than the wasteful things government is willing to pay for instead.
“$10 million for a remake of Sesame Street to show to Pakistani children,” he said.
According to Nelson, that same $10 million could be used to keep 14 Florida airport towers in operation.
You won’t hear any disagreement about that coming from Lakeland Tower Manager David Moore.
“Every body is just waiting. It’s a big waiting game. Unfortunately it’s got us all on pins and needles but we still keep doing our job everyday,” Moore said.
Those jobs will end for nearly 150 people, if lawmakers don’t find funding. Senator Nelson says to make it happen voters have to start calling their congressmen.
Then maybe when they all get back to Washington, Nelson hopes they can act.
“As soon as we get back into session after Easter we’ll be able to get people to stop this nonsense and define the funds by bringing funds that are now being wasted or appropriating additional money. Instead of just cut, cut, cut,” Nelson said.
